James Greig (1861-1941)
James Greig was born in Arbroath in 1861. He moved to London in 1891 to study art, finishing his education in Paris between 1895 and 1896. He settled in London, producing black and white illustrations for a number of magazines, including Punch and The Sketch. He was also a talented writer and historian, and was employed as art critic for The Morning Post. He also produced monographs on Gainsborough and Raeburn, and edited thc diaries of the landscape painter Joseph Farington (1747-1821). Greig also found time to paint landscapes and figurative subjects, and was elected Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1898.
