Artist Biography

James Guthrie (1859-1930)
Sir James Guthrie was a painter of landscapes, genre scenes and portraits, and an important member of the group of artists, known as the Glasgow School, who working together between 1885 and 1896 rejected academic finish and sentimentality for naturalistic style and subject matter. He was born in Greenock in 1859, and gave up the law for painting. He was largely self-taught, but in 1879 studied briefly in London, where he met John Pettie and other Scottish painters, who were among the first to establish a distinctively Scottish style of painting, characterized by freshness, and freedom of brushwork. In 1882 he visited Paris, where he was possibly influenced by Courbet’s realism, and the plein-air painting of Bastien-Lepage, a follower of the Impressionists. On his return he painted ‘A Highland Funeral’, a large, boldly painted work which established his reputation, and in 1883 ‘To Pastures New’, notable for its light, delicate colouring. In 1885 he took up portrait painting, at which he was very successful. He was knighted in 1903, and was President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1902-19. From 1919 until the year of his death he was working on ‘The Statesmen of the Great War’, a monumental work which hung in the National Portrait Gallery from 1930 to 1975.
