Adolf Heinrich-Hansen (1859-1925)
Heinrich-Hansen studied painting at the Academy of Copenhagen, Denmark. His architectural interiors show the influence of the French Impressionists, who were promoted in Denmark by the artists Krøyer and Philipsen on their return from France in the 1880s. Their influence was reinforced by two exhibitions which included the work of Manet, Monet and others. ‘A Woman Reading in an Interior’ shows a similar preoccupation with light and colour as that shown in the work of these artists. The lady’s costume is typical of the kind worn by the women of Fanø, an island off the Danish coast. The predominant blue and white china is Delft-ware, imported from Holland.
