Artist Biography

Arthur Hopkins (1848-1930)
Born in London and educated at Lancing College, Arthur Hopkins had two other artistic brothers, Edward, an illustrator, and Gerald Manley Hopkins, the celebrated poet. After spending a few years in a city office, he took up painting full time by entering into the RA Schools in 1872, and thereafter exhibited his work at the leading London galleries. A portrait and genre painter in watercolour and oil, his pictures were executed in the style of Helen Allingham, who was another artist who found some success in furnishing the Victorian desire for rural genre scenes. Hopkins also contributed illustrations to The Graphic, Punch, and The Illustrated London News.
