Artist Biography

Terrick Williams (1860-1936) was born in Liverpool. When he was twenty-five a bout of ill-health forced him to abandon the business career which his father, a merchant, had planned for him and he was at last able to fulfil his boyhood wish to become a full-time artist. In 1885 he enrolled at the Academie Royale in Antwerp under Charles Verlat and, two years later, he studied under Benjamin Constant, Bouguereau and Robert Aeury in Paris. This was a path trodden by many a student abroad at that time, some of whom on their return to Britain established ‘schools’ of painting, such as the Newlyn ‘plein-air’ School in Cornwall and the Glasgow 'realist' School. These young artists sought to represent life as they saw it and often painted out-of-doors, directly from the subject, which was not then an accepted practice. Similarly, Williams’ carefully observed paintings were the result of many preliminary sketches executed on the spot in pencil, pastel, or oil, which he later completed in the studio, but he remained an individualist, detached from any movement. He specialised in gentle seascapes, which generally include some human activity at the water’s edge, or a busy harbour scene. These paintings, full of shimmering light and colour, bear some resemblance to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist pictures and, like some of the Impressionist painters he seems to have been particularly fascinated by the hazy, atmospheric effects of early morning and twilight.
