Artist Biography

'Westminster School, The House of Lords, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Hall, St Margaret's Church, House of Commons, Henry VII Chapel'

Samuel Scott (c.1702 -1772) was one of the first English marine and topographical painters and was also one of the first artists to use watercolour, though his chief works are in oil. His early works were in the tradition of Dutch marine painting, and were mostly of naval battles, colonial forts and shipping, but on Canaletto's arrival in London in 1746 he adopted a similar style and began to paint the views of the Thames for which he is now best known.

This picture, painted at the end of his life between 1770 and 1772, shows the original Westminster Bridge, which was opened in 1750, the second bridge to be built across the Thames. It was on this that Wordsworth composed his famous sonnet beginning ‘Earth has not anything to show more fair’. The buildings most easily distinguishable are, from the left, Lambeth Palace, St. John’s Church, Smith Square, the House of Commons, Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey. The brightly-coloured barge in the foreground probably belonged to one of the livery companies of the Thames.
