Ernest Procter (1886-1935) was born in Northumberland and studied in Newlyn and in Paris at the Atelier Colarossi. Described by his friend Bernard Walke as 'essentially a decorator of spaces rather than a painter of framed pictures'. Procter's prolific output encompassed various styles and subject matter from English landscape and allegorical themes to designs for industry and decorative work. In 1920 he went to Burma for a year with his wife Dod, where they were commissioned to decorate the Kokine Palace in Rangoon. Back in England they lived and worked for many years in Newlyn before moving to Glasgow in 1934 where Procter was made Director of Studies in Design and Craft at the School of Art.
