Fritz Thaulow (1847-1906) was born in Norway and studied art in Oslo, then in Holland and Germany, before finally settling in France. His early years in Norway clearly left him with striking images since he continued to paint scenes of his native countryside – snowbound villages and river landscapes – up until about 1892. After this time he painted almost exclusively French subjects and like Monet, who was an undoubted influence on his work, seems to have been fascinated by water and the effects of light upon it. Thaulow associated with artists such as Cazin, Roll, Lhermitte and Carolus-Duran and was one of the organisers of the Salon du Champ de Mars, an alternative and more liberal group than the Société des Artistes Français, which was later known as the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
