Francis Edward James (1849-1920) was a self taught artist, he was a friend of Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821-1906) and painted landscapes, seascapes and skies, church interiors and floral pieces, many of which he exhibited at the New English Art Club in London. Although Francis James suffered from illness for most of his life his works were competently painted. He was a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists, the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. He lived and worked Sussex and later in Devon, and was a prolific artist who exhibited extensively in the London and Provincial Galleries.
