Francis Joseph ‘Wiggs’ Kinnaird (1875-1915)
‘Wiggs’ Kinnaird trained under his elder brother, the landscape painter Henry John Kinnaird. The paintings that the brothers produced were so similar in style and content that, in the past, dealers and collectors believed the signature ‘Wiggs’ to be Henry’s nom de plume. Both brothers exhibited prolifically in the provinces, and very occasionally in London. They often inscribed their work with a title, and from these one can gauge that ‘Wiggs’ travelled extensively through Great Britain in search of new subject matter. His paintings include those of Salisbury Cathedral, Dartmouth Harbour, Sharply Pool in Worcestershire, and Framlingham, Sussex. He is also known to have undertaken a painting tour of Wales in 1899. During the First World War ‘Wiggs’ joined the South Staffordshire Regiment, and was fatally wounded in the Battle of Festubert in May 1915.
