Jean-Georges Hirn (1777-1839) was a French painter who specialised in painting still-lifes. The jewel-like quality of his flowers and his eye for miniscule detail demonstrates the influence of seventeenth century Dutch painters like Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch. In order to produce such seasonally diverse blooms and fruit, Hirn either worked on this painting over the course of a year or worked from highly detailed studies. It is likely that he painted the flowers – hyacinth, tulips, paeonies, auricullas, fritillaries etc – in the spring and early summer, adding the grapes, pumpkin and pineapple in the autumn.
