Artist Biography

Robert Hills (1769-1844) was born in Islington, he was taught by the fashionable drawing master John Alexander Gresse and in 1788 entered the RA Schools, first exhibiting there in 1791. He worked mainly in watercolour and as an etcher, and specialized in painting sheep, cattle and deer against landscape backgrounds, and cottage and farmyard scenes. He also painted the animals in landscapes by Barret, Robson, Nesfield and others, and between 1798 and 1815 published a fine series of 780 etchings of such groups as source material for other artists. He sketched in various parts of the British Isles and in 1816 published his ‘Sketches in Flanders and Belgium’, an illustrated account of his visit in 1815 in the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo. In1804 he was one of the founder members of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, which provided exhibition facilities and a system of awarding honours for watercolour painters through which many specialist watercolorists of the nineteenth century earned their livelihoods. Hills exhibited nearly 600 paintings there between 1805 and 1844, and was its first secretary. His best work dates from the period 1810 to 1820.
