Artist Biography

David Adolf Constant Artz (1837-1890) studied painting at the Academy in Amsterdam, where he became influenced by Josef Israels (1824-1911), Israels was a founder member of the Hague School, a group of Dutch painters characterised by their impressionistic approach to nature and genre painting expressed through vigorous brush strokes and vivid colour. Artz travelled in Scotland, England, Spain and Italy before settling in Paris where he met Jacob Maris, also a member of the Hague School. ‘Follow the Leader’ shows Artz’s debt to Israels in its loose brush strokes, and in the glowing light that characterised the Hague School.
