Artist Biography

Il Bronzino (Florence, Italy – 1503-1572)

Agnolo Tori di Cosimo di Moriani, known as Il Bronzino, was the favourite pupil and adopted son of the mannerist painter Jacopo Pontormo. He is said to appear in Pontormo's painting of ‘Joseph in Egypt’ in the National Gallery, London, as a small boy in a cloak sitting on the steps. He was influenced by the monumentality of Michelangelo’s figures, converting his dynamic forces into a refined courtly elegance. His extraordinary technical dexterity led to his employment as court painter to Cosimo de’ Medici, who was installed as second Duke of Florence in 1557. Bronzino is perhaps best remembered for his highly finished portraits of the duke’s family and circle, their so-called ‘aristocratic detachment’ and ‘icy fascination’ subsequently determining the character of court panting throughout Europe. There are two versions of the Madonna and Child with the young St. John, Joseph and St. Anne. This painting is an almost exact replica of the one in the Louvre, which was, according to the contemporary historian Giorgio Vasari, commissioned by the physicist Francesco Montevarchi. Only the landscapes differ. The Louvre version contains a view of the Medici villa of Cafagiolo under an astral sky, while the Vienna ‘Holy Family’ is placed before a pending storm with different buildings on the hills.
