Artist Biography

Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen (1795-1860) with B.C. Koekoek and Andreas Schelthout, was one of the leading Dutch landscape painters of the first half of the 19th Century. He was born in the Hague and studied with the history painter, J.W. Pieneman (1779-1853) and his pupil Johannes Heymans, but more significantly with Simon Andrea Krausz (1760-1825), a follower of Ruisdael, who specialized in landscapes with groups of figures and animals. He was also closely associated with the Hague Sketching Club, and continued his education drawing from nature in Holland. Belgium and Germany. He painted landscapes, often with sheep and cattle, winter scenes and seascapes, characterized by their peaceful atmosphere, simple unaffected style and skillful draughtsmanship. He was elected to the Amsterdam Academy in 1822 and made President of the School of Design in the Hague. His many pupils included William Roelofs (1822-97), the first Dutch painter influenced by the Barbizon School; his daughter, Gerardina (1826-95) specialized in flower painting, and his son, Julius (1835-1925) in landscapes, particularly forest views.
