Agnes Rose Bouvier (1842-1892) was the youngest child of a French-born genre painter, Jules Bouvier, who, upon marrying a Scottish woman, settled in England and had six children, all of whom became artists. Agnes was born in 1842 in London, though the family travelled a good deal on the Continent until she was about fifteen. She was probably taught by her father and kept house for him until his death in 1867, which left her with more time for painting and exhibiting her work. In 1874 she married the architect Samuel Joseph Nicholl and thereafter exhibited under her married name. Her favourite subjects were young country girls and children, which she invariably painted in watercolour.
