Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael (1483-1520) together with Michelangelo and Leonardo, was one of the three great creators of the High Renaissance. By the age of 17 he was working for Perugino who had a great influence on the young artist, and in 1504 he went to Florence, the artistic and cultural centre of the day. By 1509 he was in Rome, working on the decoration of the Stanze in the Vatican, the first of many important projects he was to carry out for the Popes Julius II and Leo X. He enjoyed enormous success, gaining commissions from kings and princes and occupying a unique social position for an artist at that time.
