Thomas Miles Richardson Snr. (1784-1848) was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was apprenticed to an engraver and cabinet maker until, in 1806 he became a schoolmaster like his father before him. He took up watercolour painting professionally in 1813, and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy during the following year and at the other London galleries from 1818. He specialised in landscape painting and worked mainly in Northumbria, in the Border country and in Scotland. His Continental scenes were usually based upon sketches by other artists but he visited Switzerland, Italy and France himself during his later years. In 1882 he and Thomas Bewick, among others, organised the first Fine Art Exhibition in the north of England and he was a founder member of the Northern Academy of Arts. Richardson married twice, and six of his sons became artists.
