Frans Rubens with his Nursemaid in the Fruit and Vegetable Larder
Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was born in Westphalia of an Antwerp family. After training in various studios, he travelled to Italy in 1600, where he was Court Painter to the Duke of Mantua and able to study the work of artists of the High Renaissance. In 1608 he returned to Antwerp and became Court Painter to the Spanish Governors of the Netherlands. One of the greatest of Baroque painters, he is best known for his swirling compositions, rich glowing colours and voluptuous figures. He painted scenes from history and mythology, religious subjects, landscapes, and portraits which were often grand and imposing but also include tenderly intimate pictures of his family. He was also an accomplished linguist and diplomat, whose skillful conduct of negotiations between England and Spain won him an English knighthood in 1629.
Frans Snyders (1579-1657) studied with Pieter Brueghel the Younger and his early work was strongly influenced by the flower and fruit paintings of the Brueghel School. He travelled to Italy in 1608-9 and on his return entered Rubens's studio. Here his style changed, his colour became stronger, the nature he drew more bountiful, with domestic animals and birds adding movement to his still-lifes. He also painted hunting scenes, and fights between wild animals.
Rubens collaboration and friendship with Snyders lasted until his death in 1640, with Snyders painting the still-life and animals in Ruben's paintings, and Rubens the figures in Snyders's. In this painting Snyders first painted the still-life and the table, and Rubens added the figures of his son Frans, and the nursemaid on a separate strip of canvas. Frans Rubens was born in 1633 and this picture was painted in 1637-8.
